Developed through Kohler’s Innovation for Good® (IfG) incubator, KOHLER Clarity was created to address what continues to be a global water crisis with more than 2 billion people around the world lacking access to safe drinking water. Since first going to market in 2016, KOHLER Clarity has helped advance the vision of Safe Water for All, our flagship initiative committed to creating innovative solutions in four focus areas: Water Stewardship, Products, Impact Projects, and Advocacy. From fundraising efforts like the Run for Safe Water, to partnerships designed to provide access to safe water in disadvantaged communities, Clarity played a key role in shaping the future of Kohler’s safe water and sanitation impact.
From the launch of Clarity in 2016, Kohler Co. partnered with humanitarian organizations like Water Mission, World Vision, and Operation Blessing to deliver Clarity filters to the areas where it was needed the most. Between 2016 and 2019, Clarity helped an estimated 930,000 people worldwide access safe water, including hurricane survivors in Haiti and Cambodians lacking potable water. It has been deployed in several countries around the world.
In addition to the many lives impacted, KOHLER Clarity jumpstarted our IfG incubator, allowing it to evolve from an informal gathering of associates passionate about innovation with a social purpose into a formal business unit that drives innovation across the company. Today, IfG hosts the annual I-Prize competition, bringing together associates from around the world to pitch viable business opportunities that address social and environmental issues through innovative products and solutions.
Since I-Prize first launched in 2018, four ideas have been mainstreamed into the business. Four projects, including a handwashing faucet and a container-based sanitation toilet, are also currently in the incubation phase. None of this would have been possible without the invaluable learnings from the Clarity project.
As of 2022, KOHLER Clarity and KOHLER Clarity Pro products will no longer be produced. Although we have had many successes with the KOHLER Clarity program, a self-sustaining model is key to optimizing a product’s impact and we determined that there are better positioned products currently serving the market. Leveraging our learnings from the KOHLER Clarity program, we have decided to direct our attention to advancing other innovations in water, sanitation and hygiene where we can drive more sustainable, long-lasting impact at scale.
Nevertheless, the efforts behind KOHLER Clarity have been a catalyst for how we think about innovation and safe water. It has taught us the importance of building local partnerships to drive sustainable distribution and lasting impact to communities. Through IfG, we continue to partner with local organizations, small businesses, and entrepreneurs to create and distribute innovative products that bridge the gap in access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene.
