What words come to mind when you think of the word ethics? Rules, regulations, policies? How about inspiring, rewarding and fun? In 2016, the ethics committee for Kohler’s Europe, Middle East and Africa region, affectionately known as EMEA, decided it was time to show associates that ethics has applications far beyond rules and policies.
The committee launched a competition, offering the prize of a paid day off to carry out an activity that aligned with Kohler's corporate ethics principles. Participants submitted an essay explaining what they would do with such a day.
The winning entry came from Simona Cultrera, Purchasing Specialist – Engines EMEA, who chose to spend a day working with the European Women’s Management Development (EWMD) organization. An excerpt from her entry is below.
"EWMD is an international network built by women to improve awareness for female talent and the quality of management,” Simona said. “Kohler Engines EMEA is already working for work-life balance and reconciliation of children with career, so EWMD has connections with Kohler's commitment to ethical behavior."
Simona met with young women aspiring to work in the field of information technology.
"It was a stimulating experience to watch these young girls take the leap to build their future. We talked about the world of work, supply and demand, the opportunities for women and how much we still have to do to reach complete equality," she said.
Kohler EMEA's 2016 ethics campaign was a resounding success and we’re not just tooting our own horns. The group was honored with a Lotus Award by Marginalia. A magazine dedicated to human resources, Marginalia examines the new ecosystems of work through the lens of innovation, communication and leadership.
The Lotus Award recognizes companies with great cultures and celebrates those that are demonstrably investing in their workplace culture.
